Reading

At Rounds Green Primary School, reading is considered a "crucial life skill" and we aim to develop confident readers who enjoy reading for both pleasure and purpose.

At our school, we use the "Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised" programme to teach phonics. This systematic and synthetic phonics programme starts in Nursery/Reception and continues throughout the school, ensuring children build upon their phonic knowledge to decode unfamiliar words. The programme also emphasises language development as it is believed that speaking and listening skills are vital for reading.

We administer the National Phonics Screening Check in Year 1 to ensure pupils are meeting the expected standard for phonic decoding. Those who do not meet the standard in Year 1 are re-screened in Year 2 and offered continued support through phonics sessions. Children entering Key Stage 2 who still require support with reading are also provided with Little Wandle phonics and reading interventions.

In addition to the in-school programme, we also encourage parents to support their children's reading at home by providing resources and guidance through our website. This holistic approach to reading instruction aims to ensure that all pupils at Rounds Green become confident and enthusiastic readers.

Reading is embedded throughout our curriculum and we ensure children always have access to high quality text through our Reading Spine below.
